Spring-O is a one-day orienteering competition co-sponsored by NTOA and the Longhorn Council BSA. The event is open to all Scouts and Scouters, NTOA members, ROTC units, orienteering clubs and the general public! The meet attracts competitors from around the state. Come enjoy the challenging terrain of the Sid Richardson Scout Ranch near Bridgeport.

Bonus activities!

 

Zig-zag orienteering: Jens Børsting will set up this unique orienteering exercise, one that will help you learn to think and navigate fast. They’re super short courses that you can do one after the other. Race the clock or race your friends! 

Night orienteering: Bring warm clothes and a headlamp for orienteering in the dark! Our 3D world looks surprisingly 2D at night. See the Participation Guide for details.

We’ll be offering the following courses:

White: Easiest

Yellow: Experienced beginners

Orange: Intermediate

Brown: Short advanced

Green: Medium-length advanced

Red: Long advanced

FRIDAY, MARCH 24
7:00-9:00 pm For campers only: Check-in at Dining Hall
SATURDAY, MARCH 25
9:00 – 10:30 am Registration open: Check in at Dining Hall, pick up e-sticks
9:00 – 9:30 am Boy Scout merit badge briefing
9:45-10:00 am & 10:00-10:15 am Two Beginners Clinic – Open to All!
10:00 – 11:30 am Orienteers start on each course at one-minute intervals. No start-time assignments — show up at Start line during this time window.
10:30 am – 2:30 pm Results are calculated as runners finish and download e-sticks.
2:30 pm (or 3 hrs after last start) Courses close – Awards Ceremony
3:00 – 5:00 pm Control pick-up: Volunteer and get a little extra practice
7:30 pm Gather at the dining hall for Night-O briefing, turn in team rosters
8:00 pm Night-O start
9:30 pm Night-O finish, results ASAP

Meet fees

Individuals (1 person navigating on their own):
Only individuals can officially compete (awards for top 3 in each class) at NTOA events. But even if you’re doing it on your own just for recreation, please sign up as a (competitive) individual. Members and youth (Aged 19 and under) pay reduced event fees. There’s a $3 surcharge for adult day-of-race entries. So join NTOA and pre-register! Fee covers 1 map. E-punch is required — bring your own or rent from us.

Recreational Teams (2-5 people navigating together):

Rec teams aren’t eligible for awards, but all of the fun! Base fee covers the first 2 team members and 2 maps. Add people/map for $5 each. Kids aged 8 and under are free (after first 2 team members paid). There’s a $3 surcharge for day-of-race entries, and extra maps may not be available. One e-punch required — bring your own or rent from us.

Registration

Registration for this event is a two-step process.

1. General event sign-up and camping reservations (if you want to stay at camp) are made on the Longhorn Council BSA Event Site.

2. To choose the course you plan to run, select the appropriate button below, here on the NTOA site. 

Registration for this event is closed. Some extra maps may be available day of race.
