A family-friendly adventure with map & compass. No experience needed!
Orienteering is a fun way for families to spend time together outdoors, blending adventure with problem-solving and teamwork.
It's like a treasure hunt in nature, where you use a topographic map and compass to find checkpoints (we call them controls) placed out in the terrain. You choose your own route to walk (or run!) between controls, which makes it part puzzle, part exercise. The goal: Find all the controls as quickly and accurately as you can.
LEARN WHILE HAVING FUN!
Orienteering builds valuable life skills along the way—map reading, spatial awareness, and strategic thinking—without feeling like a lesson.
Kids often love the sense of independence that comes from having a map in hand and helping to chart the way.
Parents appreciate the structured environment that NTOA events provide, and the low cost to participate! A recreational team of two adults and two kids under 8 can cost as little as $20, including e-punch (electronic scoring chip) rental.
We provide the maps (which you can keep) -- all you need are sturdy footwear, a simple compass (we also have free loaners) and a sense of adventure!
FREE Beginner’s Clinic
We offer a free Beginner’s Clinic before every meet (check each event schedule for timing) that lasts about 15 min. You’ll learn how to read an orienteering map and how to use your compass and e-punch. The instructor will share some navigation tips and strategies. You’ll be ready to tackle your first course!
