What on earth is a "Dillogoat?" It's our Texas-flavored version of a fun orienteering race typically called a Billygoat. In a Billygoat race

  • There's a mass start
  • Following is allowed - encouraged, even!
  • You're allowed to skip a control or two - the meet director will tell you how many
  • First one across the finish line on each course wins

This is what we call a barebones event: No awards, no NTOA Cup points, No start times. Just fun with a map.

Warning: The location of this event at LBJ National Grasslands is rougher and more "natural" than any of the city parks and camps used for NTOA events. Full O gear is recommended. No beginners, please! The meet director reserves the right to reject any registration entries or to disallow the participation of any entrants not known to have the necessary skills and experience

  • This event will be using a sub-set of the standard NTOA classes.

  • Class Adjustments: Classes may be combined or sub-divided based on the number of entrants per class.

The Schedule

09:00 - 09:45 : Registration. You must arrive and register by 9:45 AM. If pre-registered, you must check-in and pay your fees by 9:45 AM.
 
09:45 - 09:55 : Instructions to competitors  Instructions to competitors. The meet director will provide some last-minute instructions.
 
10:00: Mass StartAs soon as instructions, maps and clues are distributed, the meet director will do a countdown for START!.
 
10:00 - 01:00 : Competitor's on the course. Every participant must return to finish and check in by 1:00 PM, whether you've found all the controls or not.
 
01:00 : NO Awards Ceremony!. Hang out and swap route choices with other orienteers. Results will be posted on the website.
 
01:15 - 02:30 : Control Bag Pickup. Not exhausted yet? Get extra experience. Volunteer to pick up a few control bags.

Equipment: Wear comfortable running shoes or hiking boots, long pants or long nylon running pants for protection against underbrush, eyewear to protect against branches, a watch as there is a time limit (3 hours unless noted otherwise), a whistle to call for help, and a compass. The compass should be protractor-style with a clear baseplate that can be purchased at many outdoor and sporting-goods stores for $10-$15.

Water:Water will be available at the start, finish and at locations on the course. However, all participants are highly encouraged to carry water to prevent dehydration.

Step 1: Registration

Online registration is highly encouraged. The number of maps with preprinted courses is based upon Online registration numbers. Day of race registrants may be required to hand draw their courses on a blank map.

The number of registatrations allowed for this venue is NOT limited by the landowner. NTOA has placed limits to keep event to a manageable size. Those limits are high enough that they have historically allowed everyone to participate. Use the following link to see the limits and the available slots for the event and for each course.

NOTE: All youth under 18 years of age must have a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.

The Dillo-Goat is being held on the LBJ-North Map.

From Dallas/Denton:

  • Exit I-35 at US 380 (University Drive)
  • West on US 380 to Decatur
  • Exit US 380 just after the Railroad overpass in Decatur
  • Head north on 730.
  • Follow directions below to get to the LBJ North Map

From Ft. Worth:

  • North on US 287 to Decatur
  • East on US380
  • Left exit in 1 mile
  • Head north on 730.
  • Follow directions below to get to the LBJ North Map

Driving Directions to the LBJ North Map

  • Turn left on 2360.
    • NOTE: 2360 connects to 730 at two places There are brown road signs on 730 at both turn offs to Black Creek Lake.
    • If you take the first left onto 2360 you will soon be heading north. This route is more direct but has more gravel road. (3.75 miles)
    • If you take the second left onto 2360 you will be heading west. This route is less direct but has less gravel road. (2.0 miles)
    • The arrow on the map above shows taking the second left onto 2360. This is the recommended route and will have NTOA signs at each turn. (Thanks, Ralph!)
  • Go west on 2372 / Claborn Rd.
  • North on 2461 / Portwood Rd. (towards Black Creek Lake)
  • Go straight past the next Black Creek Lake sign (don't turn left). NOTE: in previous years, we met at Black Creek Lake, but not this time.
  • Continue heading north on 2461.
  • Go west (left) on FS 904 towards Tadra Pt. trailhead
    (i.e. West at the ranch house, crossing the cattle guard)
  • Continue following this road until you reach the meet headquarters. (i.e. DO NOT turn right turn at Tadra Pt sign)
  • Please park in the designated areas, away from the main road. See the Google photo below:
