Team Score
Scoring for team awards in each of the six SW Championship Interscholastic Team Categories (School Varsity, Club Varsity, School Junior Varsity, Club Junior Varsity, School Intermediate and Club Intermediate) will be done as follows:

For each interscholastic class, define AWT (the average winning time) as the average of the times of the top three competitors in that class who are competing in a team category.

For each competitor in each class with a valid result, their score is computed as 60*(competitor's time)/ (AWT for the class)

For competitors with an OT, MP, DNF or DSQ result, their score will be the larger of 10+60*(course time limit)/ (AWT for the male class) and 10+60*(course time limit)/ (AWT for the female class) for that team category

Camp Cherokee and Camp Meisenback

Camp Cherokee and Camp Meisenbach are located on the magnificent 3,300-acre Clement Scout Ranch near Athens, Texas. A total of four major lakes contribute to make this a true outdoormans paradise. Soft rolling hills covered with oak, hickory and pine trees provide favorable natural habitat for the various wildlife to be found on the property. Bobcat, fox, opossum, raccoon, skunk, muskrat and rabbit can be found at various points on the property.

Camp Meisenback (Northern section of venue)

  • Central feature is a large open plateau region used for livestock grazing.
  • Gentle and broad ridge/reentrant-type terrain surrounds the plateau and falls away on all sides
  • Collection of open shelters and pit toilets in the NE portion of the map.
  • Some deep, steep-sided, high contour-detailed creeks.
  • Running speed in white areas is very fast with trees widely spaced.
  • Vegetation hazards are predominently low-lying "wait-a-minute" vines and higher-hanging green briar. Hitting the latter at full-speed could be painful.
  • Visibility is generally good to excellent except in the darkest green areas.
  • Courses are expected to be on the long side to achieve recommended winning times.
  • Facility map (from BSA, Cirle Ten Council)

Clements Scout Ranch (Southern section of venue)

  • Central feature is the chain of lakes and swamps running north/south through the map.
  • Ridge/reentrant terrain otherwise, but slightly gentler than in Camp Meisenbach.
  • Many buildings, shelters, fences and other man-made objects scattered throughout the map.
  • Running speed, vegetation and visibility are generally similar to Camp Meisenbach. However, there are more open areas whose borders have denser vegetation due to sun exposure.
  • Course lengths expected to be long.
  • Facility map (from BSA, Cirle Ten Council)

Course Setter Notes

Starts

Day 1 competition start is 840 meter walk (20 minute) from Cherokee parking, near the horse corrals. Day 1 recreational start is next to Cherokee parking. Day 2 competition start is 700 meter walk (15 minute) from Meisenbach parking, near Lake Murchison dam. Day 2 recreational start is 75 meter walk (5 minute) from Meisenbach parking.

Map Notes

Map has a 3-meter contour interval. The map uses some nonstandard symbols to define the unique vegetation. Check the legend for symbols and what they mean. A green X denotes a rootstock, still standing ( dead tree still upright). Special feature X(black) can show old cars, trailers, equipment, trash piles and other man-made items.

Trails

Some trails may be covered with leaves and may be difficult to find. Many of the cattle made trails are barely visible. Some trails have ribbons or trail signs marking them.

Water Crossings

Water levels are high. Orange course and above will get their feet wet. Bring extra shoes and socks to change after you run. Do not cross if you can't see the bottom.

Dangers

Running through unfamiliar terrain is always dangerous. Notable terrain hazards at Clements include high cliffs, uncrossable streams and marsh, barbed wire, briars, loose rocks, tree branches, and leaf-hidden hazards. Clements rivals Sid and Stubblefield for the largest variety and most quantity of sticker bushes. Orange level and above runners will need leg protection.

Rifle Range

The rifle and archery ranges are enclosed by uncrossable fence, but no shooting will take place this weekend.

Sportsmanship

The courses utilize the entire property, and pass through the camping areas. Please use courtesy around other's campsites. Members of your group should stay within the camping areas and do not use this as an opportunity to explore the camp. Competitors who venture outside the camping areas or tamper with the controls will be immediately disqualified.

Permanent Trail Markers

Some of the trails near camp are marked with orange and white markers. Orange-over-White leads back to camp (White-over-Orange leads away from camp). Here's a mnemonic: Orange you glad you're over that? Heading west will bring you either back to camp, or to one of the north-south roads on the west edge of camp.

Safety Bearing

The camp is surrounded by an uncrossable game fence. Generally go north or south to the main road or along game fence.

Ralph Courtney

Meet Director Notes

Welcome

The meet at Athens, TX is the Texas Stampede. Once again this event is to be held at the Clements Scout ranch that is just outside of town. The initial purpose of this two-day meet is to have a premiere event in the spring as the All Saints event is in the fall

Once again our host is the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts. Their property is 3300 acres of large pines and hardwood forest. The area is divided into two main camps. The first is Camp Cherokee. This camp is the main area and is the first camp that one enters from the main entrance. Day one competition will occur in this area. The second is Camp Meisenbach. The area is reached by a road that leads from the main entrance. Day two competition will occur there.

Registration and Registration Changes

This event will be structured the same as the All Saints meet in November. However, there will some registration changes as outlined below:

  1. Meet fees will be slightly lower than All Saints. This includes renting the "finger stick" for the e-punch system.
  2. Late fees will be $4 per person. It is a major inconvenience to try and register someone much less a group at the last moment. We need time to assign start times and assemble registration packets as well as estimate the number of maps to print. So, please do not register late.
  3. No show fees may be assessed. There will be a $4 per person no show fee depending upon the situation. The reason is that if we are not told of a no-show then we still incur the expense of registering this person (e.g. map printing, etc.).
    1. If you pre-register and pay at the meet but tell us of a no-show at the meet then there is a $4 per no-show fee. Normally we would ask for the full entrance fee.
    2. If you pre-register and pre-pay but tell us of a no-show at the meet then there is a $4 per no-show fee. Normally we would ask for the full entrance fee.
    3. If you pre-register and pre-pay or pay at the meet but tell us of a no-show before registration closes then there is not a charge.

Thanks

My thanks to all who have or will contribute to the operation of the Texas Stampede 2009. There are many people who help and I risk leaving out someone if I attempt to name them all. But I will mention just a few. The course setter is Ralph Courtney. His dedication and enthusiasm are unmatched. Carl Bridges for his singular dedication to all things technical. Tom Carr for runner wrangling at the Start. Keith Pittman for stepping up and assuming the complexities of the e-punch system. Finally, but not the least is Maj. Jim Methered and his JROTC cadets at John Horn High School for volunteering as the assisting school
